HMP Birmingham, a category B men’s prison located in the Winson Green area of Birmingham, England, required new ductwork installation throughout the facility. The primary focus of this project was on ensuring the highest levels of security, as breaches could lead to contraband smuggling or escape attempts. Our company was entrusted with the responsibility of executing this project, which involved close collaboration with the prison staff and meeting stringent security standards.

Two significant challenges presented themselves during this project. First, the ductwork had to meet the highest security standards to prevent any possible breaches that might allow contraband or escape attempts. Second, the installation needed to be completed while the prison remained fully operational, which necessitated careful coordination with the prison staff to minimise disruptions to daily activities.

To overcome these challenges, our team collaborated closely with HMP Birmingham staff to develop a detailed plan for the ductwork installation. The plan ensured minimal disruptions to daily operations and focused on maximising security. We chose materials resistant to tampering and designed the ductwork to prevent potential breaches. Our team’s flexibility and adaptability allowed for seamless coordination with the prison staff throughout the project.

The ductwork installation project at HMP Birmingham was successfully completed on time and within budget, with no disruptions to the daily operations of the prison. The new ductwork met all security standards and has effectively prevented breaches. As an added benefit, the prison staff reported improved air quality and reduced noise levels within the facility.

This successful outcome has led to our company being contracted by another prison and secure facility for similar projects.
