The Covid-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges to healthcare systems worldwide. One of the most pressing issues was the increased demand for hospital beds. To address this, many NHS hospitals in the UK converted office spaces into patient wards. However, these new wards required upgraded ventilation and ductwork systems to ensure proper air flow and prevent contamination.
Our company was contracted to manufacture and install these essential ductwork systems for several NHS hospitals, including Guy’s Hospital, Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester General Hospital, Whittington Hospital, and Cambridge University Hospitals.
Our company successfully manufactured and installed ductwork systems that met the unique needs of each hospital involved in this project. The adoption of several best practices during the manufacturing and installation process contributed to these successes. By covering all ductwork in blue dust protective film during manufacturing, we prevented contamination of dust and debris from entering the system. We also opted for riveting instead of drilling for ductwork assembly, creating smooth, rounded edges inside the ductwork. This improved safety, simplified cleaning and maintenance, reduced dust and bacteria build-up, and minimised leaks and air loss. Lastly, we customised the ductwork according to each hospital’s specific requirements, considering air flow, pressure, and noise levels to create tailored solutions.
The upgraded ventilation systems enabled the conversion of office spaces into functional patient wards, addressing the increased demand for hospital beds during the pandemic. With our help, NHS hospitals were able to provide safe and efficient air flow for patients and staff in these new wards.
This project demonstrates our ability to respond quickly and effectively to the needs of healthcare facilities during a crisis. Our expertise in delivering high-quality and customised ductwork solutions made a tangible difference in these hospitals’ efforts to combat the Covid-19 pandemic. We are proud to have played a role in supporting the NHS and ensuring better care for patients during such a critical time.
