Steris, a global leader in sterilisation and contamination control, has over 40 years of experience in providing safe and effective gamma irradiation sterilisation. Their facility in Daventry experienced an issue with high evaporation in the cobalt pool beneath their gamma room, which was affecting their operations and making it difficult for engineers to work in the hot and enclosed space. Our company was contracted to address this issue and lower the temperature of the room by forcing chilled air into the pool space, ultimately reducing evaporation.
With a tight deadline of a single day of shutdown allowed by Steris, our company faced the challenge of quickly and effectively manufacturing and installing new ductwork systems to replace the existing ones. This had to be done in a way that not only resolved the temperature and evaporation issues but also ensured the long-term safety and effectiveness of the new ductwork.
Our team promptly removed the existing ductwork systems that came up through the floor and replaced them with new 304 grade stainless steel ductwork. Stainless steel was chosen for its excellent resistance to gamma radiation, which can cause damage to materials over time.
